"Fruta Fresca" ("Fresh Fruit") is a vallenato song written and performed by Colombian recording artist Carlos Vives and produced by Emilio Estefan and Juan Vicente Zambrano as the lead single from his studio album El Amor de Mi Tierra in 1999. The song incorporates the sound of Latin pop and Colombian vallenato music. In the song, he compares his lover's kisses to fresh fruit. The track was well received by critics who praised the production of the record. "Fruta Fresca" became Vives' first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart.

It received three Latin Grammy nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Tropical Song and a Lo Nuestro nomination for Tropical Song of the Year. Vives received an American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers award for Pop/Contemporary Song in 2001 for his composition of the song. In 2003, Brazilian boy band Br'oZ covered the song in the Portuguese language under the title "Prometida" for their album Popstars which peaked at number two on the Brazilian Airplay Chart.

American singer Selena has released five studio albums, three live albums, three boxsets, two remix albums, one soundtrack album, and twenty compilation albums. Credited for elevating a music genre into the mainstream market, Selena remains the best-selling Tejano recording artist whose posthumous releases continue to outsell those of living musicians. and continues to outsell living musicians. As of 2015, the singer has sold 60 million copies worldwide, and was named the "Top Latin Artist of the '90s" and "Best-selling Latin Artist of the Decade" by Billboard magazine.

Selena's career began as lead vocalist of Los Dinos in 1980. Her albums with Los Dinos on the indie labels failed to gain any chart success. She signed with EMI Latin nine years later as a solo artist though her band continued to tour with her. She released her self-titled debut album that same year, which peaked at number seven on the U.S. Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart. With Selena, the singer outsold other competing female Tejano artists. Her second album, Ven Conmigo, was released a year later and was billed as the first Tejano recording by a female musician to achieve gold status in the United States.

Desde un Principio: From the Beginning is a greatest hits album from American recording artist Marc Anthony. The album was released on November 9, 1999 by RMM Records & Video (RMM). It was a result of Anthony leaving RMM Records and signing on with Columbia Records. The recording contains twelve tracks from his years with RMM, a cover of the Rafael Hernández song "Preciosa", and two duets - one featuring Jennifer Lopez, the other featuring La India.

Allmusic's Jose Promis praised Desde un Principio: From the Beginning, calling the album an "ideal introduction" to the artist, although he complained about the songs on it being "truncated", particularly towards the end. The album received a Billboard Latin Music Award for Latin Greatest Hits Album of the Year. Desde un Principio: From the Beginning reached number one on both the Billboard Top Latin Albums and the Billboard Tropical Albums charts, and became the best-selling album of 2000 on both charts. The album was certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after shipments reached 500,000 copies.
