Introduction -
Latin music (Portuguese and Spanish: música latina) is a term used by the music industry as a catch-all category for various styles of music from Ibero-America, which encompasses Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and the Latino population in Canada and the United States, as well as music that is sung in either Spanish and/or Portuguese. Selena's career began as lead vocalist of Los Dinos in 1980. Her albums with Los Dinos on the indie labels failed to gain any chart success. She signed with EMI Latin nine years later as a solo artist though her band continued to tour with her. She released her self-titled debut album that same year, which peaked at number seven on the U.S. Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart. With Selena, the singer outsold other competing female Tejano artists. Her second album, Ven Conmigo, was released a year later and was billed as the first Tejano recording by a female musician to achieve gold status in the United States.

Desde un Principio: From the Beginning reached number one on both the Billboard Top Latin Albums and the Billboard Tropical Albums charts, and became the best-selling album of 2000 on both charts.
