Concordia Newsletter

NEWSLETTER

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

Help out now!

• Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
• Give people the Civility Barnstar.
• Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
• Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
• Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

Decision Making

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

Well, there is an option when blocking to either disable or enable account creation, and to disable or enable autoblock. There has been some discussion in the past about whether autoblock should be disabled everytime someone is blocked purely for username, only some of the time, etc. My feeling has been that unless the username appears to be bad faith, that autoblock should not be enabled. I must admit, though, that when I saw the username in the account creation log I assumed it was a vandal account or a deliberate breach of the username policy. When I saw it was a doppelganger account, I went to unblock, only to see that User:Yamla had already done so. Natalie 21:10, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Pith Helmet: ligatures

Dear User:NetRolller 3D: you changed my ligatures "Æ" -> "AE", and "Æ" -> "Ae" - with a remark about Britannica. Why, for the love of Mike? My source for these was the "Shorter Oxford Dictionary", not Britannica. What's wrong with ligatures (note: not diphthongs) anyway? I use them whenever appropriate - they're there in the "edit box" to use ... so: why not? (And: why should I not change it back again? - Whatever else I may be, I'm not a vandal!) Well, now you have me in two minds as to whether to change the (disconnected) ligatures back again or not. I suppose there is the (recent) saw: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Warning, re: spelling changes.

In a recent edit, you changed one or more words from one international variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect other forms of English in Wikipedia articles.

For subjects exclusively related to Britain (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. If it is an international topic, use the same form of English the original author used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to the other, even if you don't normally use the version the article is written in. Respect other people's versions of English. They in turn should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. Re: Spelling & why.

Because I'm British, and that's how we spell it over here, generally. As the template is an international topic we defer to the creators use of English (which is Br-Eng in this case), as per the MoS. Matthew 10:28, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Gnome! Your bot was in error, but it isn't his fault. The logo is MPL/GPL/LGPL-ed, and not used under fair-use, only someone has incorrectly tagged it. I'm going to restore the image on my page. Note on use of brackets in quotes

You said:

"Remove strange quote formatting. If you think the quotes are needed, also add an inline "says XXX". Also, don't simulate calligraphic initials with brackets."

Wikipedia uses many methods of quoting. Use of ""[ref]. is one of them. "" says XXX[ref]. is another. We use many more, such as above where I quote you. Brackets are used within a quote for content not part of the quote. For example:

"[Y]ou think the quotes are needed", Note that "y" was not capitalized in the actual quote, so here it is in brackets so as to not misquote. WAS 4.250 (talk) 01:23, 3 January 2008 (UTC)

Another fix of the problem is using a memory buffer larger than 65,535 bytes (e.g. a 32-bit integer) for the re-assembly of the packet. (This is essentially a breaking of the specification, since it adds support for packets sized near a megabyte.)

Could you clarify how you came up with the megabyte size? If the structure of the IP header limits the fragment offset to (2¹³−1)×8 = 65528 bytes and the total length to 2¹⁶−1 = 65535 bytes, it seems to me that the data could not reach further than 131063 bytes, even if we're dealing with an invalid IP header that has IHL = 0. Wrong block settings on this Tor exit node

I am using Wikipedia through Tor (xB Browser to be exact) right now, and my current exit node (204.8.156.142) has incorrect block settings. According to WP:TOR, Tor exit nodes should get an indefinite anon-only+no account creation+no-autoblock block, set to expire in 2010 if they are not abused. However, this one has a full block, possibly including autoblock, with the block description being "This is an open proxy or a zombie computer", which doesn't fulfill the "confirmed abuse source" requirement for a hard block; also the expiration time appears to be an error (Tor exit nodes should be indefinite). Note that the next request template shouldn't be taken as a full unblock request, but a modification request. --NetRolller 3D 19:41, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Decline reason: Sorry, but soft-blocking Tor nodes is not the policy, it's something that some admins thought was a good idea, mainly before the IP block exemption tool was added. So the non-anon-only block is appropriate. Mangojuice^talk 20:41, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

I was actually testing XeroBank Browser - I wanted to confirm if v2.0.0.17b really exists, as everything lists v2.0.0.16a as the latest. By the way, there is another problem with the block: open proxy blocks should be indefinite, this one isn't. --NetRolller 3D 22:29, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

So you don't need to be using Tor to edit, then? If that's the case, I would suggest you just avoid it. As for the duration, I'm going to leave it alone; open proxies can always be reblocked. IP addresses change owners sometimes and it is reasonable to have such blocks reevaluated every 2 years or so. Mangojuice^talk 03:03, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

SVG Font

I see that you fixed the font in wikimedia:File:Libyan_Uprising.svg, can you help me fix the font in wikimedia:File:Map_of_collective_bargaining_legislation.svg? The current font used has a kerning issue when rendered by wikipedia, although looks correct when I display it directly or render it to png using imagemagick. I assume it's simply due to wikipedia not having the font, but even if the font gets replaced, the replacement font should kern correctly.
