Cuba, Chile

Colombia

During the Cold War era Colombia was an aligned country and the only one in Latin America excluding Puerto Rico. Colombia participated on the Korean War with over 4000 soldiers according to the media and a little over 1000 according to wikipedia and. Somalia

At that time, Somalia was not a first world country. Although it was a British territory until 1960, the country suffered a revolution in 1969. After which, the revolutionary leader Mohammed Siad Barre established a rule that combined Marxist ideals with Islamic ideals.[[1]] The Soviet Union "vowed to support Somalia". [[2]] Therefore, at that time, Somalia was a Second world country, aligned with the USSR. angola

Angola isnt at all in the first world, because it was a single party state socialist country. Can someone correct it pleese (201.82.151.218 (talk) 22:49, 19 June 2012 (UTC))

Angola formally became independent on 11 November 1975. This map, however, is intended to portray the world in mid-1975, shortly before Angola's independence. Angola was still considered Portuguese territory at the time pictured, so it must be colored blue, as Portugal was an ally of the United States. See e.g. Angolan_War_of_Independence. I suggest that China's bloc be represented separately by using an orange colour - note that this Chinese-led bloc was not isolated to Asia - it included Albania up until 1978.--R-41 (talk) 21:08, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

Regarding the Chinese bloc, my concern would be that changing it to have a separate color would necessitate changing a large number of image captions in various languages, which I am not capable of doing. Another problem is that the map is currently used for illustrating the original definitions of the First, Second, and Third Worlds on many pages; introducing a fourth color would make it less useful in this regard. hello vorziblix, you are right that the situation in mid-1975 was as you describe but it seems very confusing then. angola as well as mozambique were heavily supported by soviet bloc and lead by socialist movements, so blue colour struck to the eyes of anybody who knows anything about their history. if you shift the dating to the end of 1975, you would have both or at least angola in red colour. also zaire was supported by CIA and i don't see it as independent. i can check their history more in deep but in my eyes zair was in 1975 blue not green. Angola was clearly a Communist state after 1975. in fact Cubans were sent to Angola to try to make it into comunism as well. over all i think they were very successful becuase Angola adopted communism and changed its flag to represent its new communist heritage. it should be colored Red and not blue or green. 99.45.130.77 (talk) 04:29, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

South Africa

This is not about 1st world 2nd world or 3rd world it is about Global politics during 1975. the colors represent communism ,Anticommunist and Non-Aligned. To answer your question South,Africa and Namibia were both Anti-Communist. 99.45.130.77 (talk) 03:57, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

Date of map

As Mozambique gained independence on June 25, 1975, thereby moving (in the political sense) from the First World to the Second World, the map should be dated between May and June 1975, rather than May to August 1975. Milesli (talk) 06:18, 11 April 2013 (UTC)

Once again this is not about numbered worlds (Meaning levals of economic activity) this is about the spread of Communism. Of course Mozambiques Motherland was Anti-Comunist but the local governemnt in Mozambique was not Anti-Communist it was considered part of the Non-Aligned World on this map (not the 3rd world as you call it) 99.45.130.77 (talk) 04:32, 12 December 2013 (UTC)

Puerto Rico

Where would Puerto Rico fall in this map? Puerto Rico has been an unincorporated territory of the US for many years.

Latin America

Latin America was not "unaligned". The leadership of Latin American countries (other than Cuba) was generally heavily pro-US, and they were in a formal defensive alliance with the United States. Article 28 of the charter of the Organization of American States reads:

"Every act of aggression by a State against the territorial integrity or the inviolability of the territory or against the sovereignty or political independence of an American State shall be considered an act of aggression against the other American States."

Members of the Organization of American States at the time represented by the map (between May and August of 1975) were the United States, plus all the rest of the Americas excepting Cuba, Canada, Suriname and the Bahamas.

Thus all of the Americas excepting Cuba, Suriname and the Bahamas should be painted in blue (as Canada, albeit not a member of the OAS, was a part of NATO).

Cambodia

Cambodia should be coloured red, too. From April, 1975 it was a major ally of the Soviet bloc, it was called "Democratic Kampuchea" under the leadership of Pol Pot. Oppashi (talk) 19:44, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
