Summary

Hojo Takatoki tormented by tengu. 1883. By Yoshitoshi.

from here

HOJO Takatoki was the 14th regent (office between 1316 - 1326) to Kamakura bakufu (Japanese feudal government headed by a shogun). He devoted himself in drinking and dancing Dengaku, then neglected the politics. One night, a few a priest-like dressed Dengaku performer came up in front of drunken Takatoki. They were Karasu Tengu (crow-billed goblin) that came to tease Takatoki. Takatoki, who didn't know that, started to dance, asking them to teach him Dengaku dance. They danced all night. Then, jeering laughter of Tengu rang in the sky, Takatoki fainted. It was depicted in "Taiheiki" (The Record of the great peace).
