Summary

Description
English: 4. Ulysses leaning on his pilgrim's staff, and recognised by his old dog, Argos. A favourite type with both Greeks and Romans. That it conveyed the idea of a happy termination of one's labours, as in the case of the typical wanderer, is manifested by its being chosen to decorate an Attic tombstone, where it, no doubt, was understood in the same sense as the ship sailing into harbour on Roman monuments. Early Greek intaglio, on a chalcedony scarabaeoid. (Leake.)
