Description
English: Friary Gate (alias Sparke's Gate), Exeter Street, in the parish of St Jude's, Plymouth, Devon. Photograph by Rugg Monk c1890. An early 18th century rebuild of the original (and apparently dilapidated) 13th century entrance to the Whitefriar's Abbey. Known as Sparke's Gate, after the prominent local Sparke family which resided there for several centuries after the Dissolution of the Monasteries by King Henry VIII.
