Summary

Description
English: The so-called catacombs were carved in the rock wall on the edge of the cemetery of St. Peter in Salzburg. They were never used as graves but served as meeting places. The Maximus Chapel is the highest chapel in the complex. It was first mentioned in 1178 and is dedicated to St. Maximus. Hermits used the area under the arch as a sleeping place. The memorial plaque for the martyrdom of Maximus was installed in 1521.
