Summary

Description
English: Exhibit in the in the Luray Caverns Car and Carriage Museum, Lurary, Virginia, USA.

1849-1859 ROAD COACH

Interesting features. This vehicle was the “bus” of the period. Even though comparatively small in size, it was able to transport 20 people and their luggage. The horses had to be inconspicuously coloured as nearly alike as possible, and have almost the same gait. Since it was considered bad form to use the hand brake except on steep hills, the wheel horses took the strain of stopping the coach.

  • Motive power: 4 horses
  • Made in: London, England
