I am an editor of Wikipedia (http://wikipedia.org ), a
multilingual project to create a complete, accurate, and
open-content encyclopedia. Volunteers from around the world
collaboratively edit Wikipedia, which is one of many projects of
the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation
(http://wikimediafoundation.org ). We depend on photography to
clearly illustrate our articles.

Your photograph photograph of Peter Adkison at

that appears in the web page at

looks like it would be an excellent illustration for the
Wikipedia article about Peter Adkison
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Adkison ).

However, we can only use your material if you are willing to
grant permission for it to be used under terms of a suitably free
license. The two most convenient would be the Creative Commons
Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license*, or the GNU Free
Documentation License* (GFDL). This means that although you
retain the copyright and authorship of your own work, you are
granting permission for others to use, copy, and share your
materials freely, and even potentially use them commercially, so
long as they do not try to claim the copyright themselves, or try
to prevent others from using or copying them freely (e.g.,
"share-alike"). Please do note that your contributions may not
remain intact as submitted; these licenses, as well as the
collaborative nature of our project, also entitles others to
edit, alter, and update them at will, i.e., to keep up with new
information, or suit the text to a different purpose. If you're
worried about such things, the GFDL expressly protects creators
"from being considered responsible for modifications made by
others."

* The Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license is
summarized here:

while the full details are here

A copy of the GNU Free Documentation License is here:

If you do agree to grant permission for use, we will credit you,
state the image was based on your work and is used with your
permission, and provide a link back to your website. Just let me
know how you would like to be credited, and if a link different
than
http://www.weekendwarrior.com/gamex2003pix/adkison/100_0023.htm
would be appropriate. I'll upload a full copy of my request and
your response along with the image as evidence of your
permission.

If you do decide to grant permission, in addition to letting me
know, it would be helpful as further documentation of your intent
if you were to add a note to the effect of the grant on
http://www.weekendwarrior.com/gamex2003pix/adkison/100_0023.htm
Something like "I hereby grant permission to reuse this
photograph under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License,
Version 1.2 or any later version publised by the Free Software
Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, with no Front-Cover
Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts." or "I hereby grant permission to
reuse this photograph under the terms of the Creative Commons
Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 license."

If you have any questions about the process, what rights you
would be granting, or anything related, please let me know and
I'll answer to the best of my ability.

I hope you will consider accepting our request.

Thank you for your time,

I took that picture and I'm fine with it being used, so if you could
credit it to Cloud Kingdom Games (preferably) or to me (Matt Mayfield)
that would be great. I've added the Creative Commons license link and
attribution statement to image gallery pages.

That's Rick Smith (www.cloudkingdom.com/Authors/ras.aspx) with Peter.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Matt Mayfield

(I've also deleted a copy of my original message that was appended to Mr. Mayfield's response.)
