English: Illustration of a typical pedestal-style sump pump. The pump impeller is located in the foot of the pump and the discharge port is at the left side of the foot, threaded to accept a pipe that carries the water up and away from the area. The centrifugal impeller is driven by a metal shaft located in the vertical tube, atop which is a fractional-horsepower electric induction motor. At the right is a black plastic float of the type used in toilet tanks, attached to a vertical rod that is free to move up and down in the guide attached to the drive shaft tube. An adjustable rubber stop on the rod rises with the rod to trip the lever of the power switch mounted on top of the motor, thus starting the pump. As the water level drops, the rod falls and a nut or cap on the upper end of the rod pulls the switch lever down and shuts the pump off. As the sump refills the cycle repeats. |
