Summary[edit]

Description

Installation by Michael Smith, Imagine the View from Here! (Installation view, Museo Jumex, Mexico City, 2018). The image illustrates a later work in Michael Smith's career from the late 2010s, when his immersive installations involving the performance persona, "Mike," often centered on themes involving aging or the art world. This work combines both themes, critiquing the art world’s relationship to development while reflecting on middle-class aging through an exhibition presenting tradeshow booths and promotional videos from the fictional "International Trade and Enrichment Association" (ITEA) that offered art lovers (with Mike as surrogate) a faux, "Fully Curated Timeshare" in a museum as an investment and luxury destination. This work was publicly commissioned and exhibited at a prominent international museum and discussed in art and daily press publications.

Purpose of use

The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a late body of work in Michael Smith's career in the 2010s: his immersive installations still involving the performance persona, "Mike," which explored various late-life indignities—aging, "encouraged" retirement, the feeling of invisibility—as well as the art world. These often-sprawling projects often involved drawings, videos, performance, photographs and other media. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to understand this late development in Smith's work, which brought him ongoing recognition and coverage by major critics and publications. Smith's work of this type and this series is discussed in the article and by critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Michael Smith, and the work no longer is viewable, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information

The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.
