Summary

Description

Massive sulfide (9.3 cm across at its widest) with pyrrhotite, magnetite, and chalcopyrite (copper ore) from the Norilsk Mining District in Siberia, Russia.

This amazing piece of copper ore is from the Talnakh Copper-Nickel Deposit in Siberia. The rock is dominated by pyrrhotite (Fe(1-x)S - imperfect iron monosulfide), which is a washed-out brassy color, and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2 - copper iron sulfide), which is a yellow-brassy color. The scattered black crystals are magnetite (Fe3O4 - iron oxide). Massive sulfide rocks like this are hosted in gabbrodolerites of the lower series of a differentiated layered igneous intrusion associated with the hotspot-generated Siberian Traps Flood Basalt. The Siberian Traps and associated intrusive rocks date to Permian-Triassic boundary times, at 251 Ma.

Locality: at or near Talnakh, Norilsk Mining District, Putoran Plateau, Krasnoyarsk Territory, northern Siberia, Russia.
