Summary

Description

Maria gravida, or Mary at the Spinning Wheel from Németújvár

C. 1410 Tempera , Wood 89 × 78 cm

Inv.: 52.656 Location: Hungarian National gallery

Painted around 1410, this panel of the Madonna, originally from Németújvár (today: Güssing, Austria), is one of the most valued treasures in the collection. The altar painting had a horizontal format before the left side was lopped off. This part of the painting had shown an angel appearing before the slumbering St Joseph in order to dispel his doubts. The bit of green wing and red clothes, the straw hat tied to a stick, and the small cask of water in the left of the painting all clearly refer to this episode. In the center of the image we see the Virgin in the company of two angels as she spins: her right hand holds a spindle, while her left hand guides the yarn. Next to her is the spinning wheel. The Holy Spirit in the form of a dove hovers by her gold halo. The archangel Gabriel's words of welcome, spoken at the time of the Annunciation, can be read in Gothic minuscule in the book on the bookstand: Ave gratia plena, Dominus tecum, or "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you." The folds of Mary's long, blue dress and the handling of the light make it clear that Mary is expecting. Infrared photos of the painting show that under Mary's clothes, the master had sketched the child in her belly. Curled up in the fetal position, the tiny Jesus was surrounded by two halos with a cross on his shoulder, referring to the Passion.
