Français : Ce portrait de l'impératrice a été commandé par Ismaïl Pacha au photographe et peintre Gustave Le Gray, alors professeur de dessin de ses fils au Caire, et offert à l'impératrice lors de l'inauguration du canal de Suez. La peinture a ensuite été donnée par l’Impératrice à sa filleule, Madame Pietri, qui l’avait accompagnée dans ce voyage en Égypte.
English: This portrait of the Empress Eugénie was commissioned by the Pasha of Egypt, Isma'il Pasha, from the painter and photographer Gustave Le Gray in 1869 on the occasion of the inauguration of the Suez Canal. He offered it as a gift to Eugénie. The Empress subsequently gave the work to her god-daughter, Madame Pietri, who had accompanied Eugénie on the journey to Egypt.
