Summary

Description
English: "Here rests in peace, Maxima a servant of Christ who lived about 25 years and (was) laid (to rest) 9 days before the Kalends of July of the year when the senator Flavius Probus the younger was consul [modern: June 23, 525]. She lived with her husband (for) seven years and six months. (She was) most friendly, loyal in everything, good and prudent."
Early Christian funerary inscription in italic writing, 525 AD. Note the cross, the (now common) phrase hic requiescit in pace (here rests in peace) and the epithet ancilla Christi (servant of Christ), which are Christian elements. The mention of her age, the time she lived with her husband, her character and dating of the burial, relative to the Kalends and mentioning the ruling consul to specify the year, show a clear Roman influence. The grammatical errors and the uneven, italic script betray a non-professional scribe. Museo Epigraphico, Terme di Diocleziano, Rome, Italy
