Description
English: North Eastern Railway (NER), Brake Van No. 1840. Brake van according to drawing 18 with bogies, baggage compartment and three third-class compartments. Clerestory roof. Built in 1895. 52 feet long. An exterior view of the sister brake van No. 1841 is shown in North Eastern Railway Association (ed.): North Eastern Record. Volume 2, p. 58, plate 1.88. The car is already equipped with the Westinghouse air brake, as indicated by the brake valve and pressure gauge. The handbrake is the horizontal wheel on the pillar. The other wheel at the front is part of the device for uncoupling the coach while the train is moving, to use it as a slip car. The guard was able to observe the track through the windows in the front wall while operating the slip car.
