35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Canidae; Genus: Canis; Genus species: Canis dingo. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 150 cm; Height: 50 cm; Weight: 20 kg; Identification: The dingo is reddish-brown with irregular white patches; Habitat: Tropical forests to semiarid regions; Diet: Carnivore: small mammals, lizards, grasshoppers, feral pigs, kangaroos; Reproduction: Four to five pups are born after a gestation period of 63 days. The young are weaned by two months of age and are independent by one year. In captivity, dingoes live up to 14 years; Social Structure: Dingoes live in family groups that are similar to wolf packs or groups of coyotes. They may gather in large groups in order to hunt larger prey; Behavior: Dingoes have a very bad habit of killing more than it needs for food. It is destructive to sheep and poultry especially; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: The dingo of Australia may once have been an even earlier, part-domesticated form of the wolf.
