Description

This is the logo for Delta State University. Further details: This is the official seal of Delta State University. Designed in 1928 as a project for an art class, it was loosely based on the seal of the State of Mississippi, with a triangle behind it, signifying not only the Greek form of a capital Delta, but also the Pythagorean symbol of harmony, or the triad. In the talons of the eagle are an olive branch and arrows respectively, representing the wisdom and order of peace contrasted with the power and force of war. That the eagle holds both equally represents that the university, represented by the eagle (as well as the outer circle) is a threshold for reconciling opposites through knowledge, as both talons are parts of the same eagle. On the chest of the eagle is a bunting with 1924 (the year of the university's establishment) above five stripes, alternating opposite colors. The eagle's head faces left because it favors the governing force of peace (through education) over the active force of war or personal desire. Another representation of the resolution of opposites is in number. There are three arrows and four olive leaves, since three and four are ancient numerical symbols of opposites. These numbers also represent the year of establishment, since 7 (or 3 + 4) is the theosophic reduction of 1924 (1 + 9 + 2 + 4 = 16; 1 + 6 = 7). Along the outer circle of the seal is an expression of the name and location of the university. Originally, the bunting had more stripes, and there were eighteen stars instead of the number 1924.
