Notes unopened can of 'Tiki' Minced Toheroa Concentrate packed by Northland and Hauraki Canneries Ltd Toheroa and toheroa soup has an iconic place within the New Zealand culinary lexicon. Canned toheroa soup was available on grocery shelves until the 1970s. Since then strict regulations have been introduced to control the diminishing stock of this prized shellfish. Although some gourmets prefer paua soup there is an apocryphal story that 'an American once tried to buy New Zealand just to have the exclusive rights to toheroa soup'.
