Summary

Description
English: The front facade of the Neuer Marstall (New Royal Stables) in Berlin-Mitte. It was built 1896-1901 by Royal Architect Ernst von Ihne in the Neo-barock style as substitue for the Royal Stables Unter den Linden, which were demolished to make room for what is now House 1 of the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin (Berlin State Library). The former horse stables of Neuer Marstall were turned into book stacks in 1921 and the building was forthwith used by the Berlin City Library. Damaged in WWII, the building was reconstructed 1950-1954 and 1961-1965 without most of the original ornaments by sculptor Otto Lessing. It is still partly used by the Berlin City Library and also houses the "Hochschule für Musik 'Hanns Eisler'" ("University for Music 'Hanns Eisler'"). The building has been designated as a historic landmark.
