Description
English: A memorial plaque placed on the mass grave of 119 men of the crew of HMS Invincible which floundered and sank on Hammond’s Knoll which is a 6-mile long sandbank off the coast Happisburgh. It is located in the churchyard of parish church of All Mary’s, Happisburgh, Norfolk. The disaster happened on the 16 March 1801. The inscription reads,
Transcript of Memorial Lettering:
On 16 March 1801, HMS INVINCIBLE
was wrecked of Happisburgh when
on her way to join the fleet with
Admiral Nelson at Copenhagen.
The day following, the Ship sank with
the loss of some four hundred lives.
One hundred and nineteen members
of the Ship’s Company lie buried here.

that were in it…..”

by the Parochial Church Council and
The Officers and Ship’s Company of
