Jurassic World: Chaos Theory is an American animated science fiction action-adventure television series for Netflix and is the second television series in the Jurassic Park franchise. It serves as a direct sequel to Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, while also taking place between Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Jurassic World: Dominion. Aaron Hammersley and Scott Kreamer serve as showrunners and executive produce the series along with Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow, and Frank Marshall. It features Paul-Mikél Williams, Sean Giambrone, Raini Rodriguez and Kausar Mohammed reprising their voice roles from Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous (2020–2022), with Darren Barnet joining the main cast.

The series premiered on May 24, 2024.

Premise

Six years after Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous, members of "The Nublar Six" reunite and find themselves on an adventure to unravel a conspiracy that threatens dinosaurs and humankind alike and learn the truth about what happened to one of their own.

Six years after escaping the Isla Nublar, Darius, feeling guilty about Brooklynn, works with the Department of Prehistoric Wildlife (DPW) to pursue a half-blind Allosaurus that caused the incident and fails to capture it after the latter attacks a preserved Pachyrhinosaurus. At night at the cabin, he reunites with Ben who reveals that Brooklynn's death is no accident and someone is tracking them. As Ben tries to explain further details, the pack of Atrociraptors attack them and cut off the security system.

After escaping from the raptors, Ben and Darius decide to move to Texas where Sammy lives. However, Ben felt paranoid about the pursuers as they stopped at the gas station for supplies. Suddenly, a juvenile Nasutoceratops traps itself at the gas station which might cause an explosion. Darius and Ben successfully free the juvenile and extinguish the fire. Ben and Darius travel onward to visit Sammy unaware that the pursuer is following them.

Darius and Ben arrive at Sammy's farmhouse and reunite with Sammy, safeguarding an adult Ankylosaurus Bumpy after the Mantah Corp collapses. Upon expressing her situation with her concern with Yaz, losing contact with her parents, and mourning Brooklynn, Sammy tries to distract herself from reality and focus on her lifestyle. Darius and Ben explain the incident being set up and Sammy reveals that Brooklynn left a map when she last saw her. The Atrociraptors arrive and the trio quickly escapes leaving Bumpy to fend for herself.

Upon witnessing DPW transporting dinosaurs with Darius witnessing the Allosaurus captured, the trios arrived at Kenji's place and met up with Kenji, who resents Darius after the incident. The trio revealed the map to Kenji and learned that Brooklynn had visited Daniel Kon under house arrest without informing Kenji, who refused to visit him. Having grown concerned about Yaz, Sammy, and Ben decide to visit her leaving Darius to handle Kenji alone. Upon climbing to the top of the cliff where Kenji broke up with Brooklynn, Darius expresses to Kenji about Brooklynn's guilt after what happened. Reluctantly, Kenji decides to visit Daniel Kon. Meanwhile, Bumpy is later captured by DPW.

As Ben and Sammy travel to visit Yaz, the duo witness three Stygimolochs mistreated by their handler and decides to free them. Darius and Kenji visit Daniel Kon and question him about Brooklyn. During a private conversation about a family matter, Daniel persuades Kenji to continue his legacy of restoring the company and Kenji declines upon learning of his deception and negligence he endurance. Having realized his error, Kon then tells Kenji and Darius about his visit with Brooklynn and reveals her investigation on the illegal trafficking of dinosaurs and plans to get herself involved. The security system was later cut off and the pack of Atrociraptors commanded by their trainer attacked them. Daniel Kon sacrifices himself allowing Darius and Kenji to escape.

Upon arrival at a non-dino campus, Ben and Sammy reunite with Yaz who has PTSD after the dinosaur arrives on the mainland and reveals the project she was working on. Upon revealing the truth behind Brooklynn's death, Yaz felt safer here despite their warning. Sammy expressed her disappointment in Yaz having blocked her contact. However, the pair of Becklespinaxes attack the campus and prevent Ben, Yaz, and Sammy from escaping. The DPW arrived and shot the tires causing the Becklespinax to push them off the bridge.

After falling off the bridge, Ben, Sammy, and Yaz escape from their watery grave leaving Ben's van sinking. They spot DPW transporting Becklespinax and plan to follow them. After Kenji grieves his father, Darius recognizes the driver named Mateo who saved them from the raptor and revealed what happened to Brooklynn's death. Working as a DPW truck driver for transporting dinosaurs, Mateo revealed that the Allosaurus that killed Brooklynn was dropped off on purpose. As he transports the Allosaurus to the exact location where Brooklynn resides, Mateo notices the truck security unlock automatically and releases the Allosaurus which leads directly to Brooklynn's death. Horrified by this, Matteo keeps her phone to hide suspicion and quits DPW soon after. Having felt ashamed about the incident, Mateo returns the phone to Darius to make amends for his action. Darius and Kenji unlock the phone and find Brooklynn's apartment in Colorado. After departing from Mateo, Darius and Kenji investigate the apartment and make a shocking discovery about Brooklynn's bag stashed with Kon's money and a website called Dark Jurassic which causes them to grow more suspicious about Brooklynn.

Ben, Sammy, and Yaz arrive at the DPW headquarters only to discover that Darius' boss, Dudley Cabrera, secretly works with smugglers. After knocking out Cabrera, the trio found Bumpy in the container and was unable to free her, Ben snuck into the containment truck with Sammy and Yaz following. After leaving the apartment with Kenji, Darius manages to locate the drop point where DPW makes a trade and waits till midnight. While waiting, Darius and Kenji look into Brooklynn's phone upon revealing Darius' relationship with Brooklynn from his past voicemails. Darius admits to Kenji that he had secret feelings with Brooklynn when she visited him at his cabin and was later shocked to see her last video the night she died, to which Darius failed to respond. Despite this, they found the drivers traded with the Baryonyx and followed the driver who carried it.

With Ben safeguarding Bumpy who became unwell, the Nublar Six arrives at the docks and sneaks into the warehouse only to deduce that the DPW is secretly smuggling dinosaurs to foreign countries. Upon finding the half-blind Allosaurus in the containment, Kenji concludes that Brooklynn is using Kon's money to buy off an Allosaurus. Ben, afraid of losing Bumpy, meets up with a group to help Bumpy. Out of surprise, Sammy revealed that Bumpy had a difficult birth while laying an egg. But, their excitement was cut short when Dudely Cabrera corners them.

Cabrera reveals that he had only sent the Allosaurus to scare Brooklyn but her death wasn't part of his plan. Rather, it's revealed that a mysterious woman working for someone known as the Broker has secretly been using Cabrera to smuggle dinosaurs. The trainer orders her raptors to kill Cabrera and targets the Nublar Six for coverup but Mateo rescues them from their death. In the chaos, several dinosaurs are released, including Big Eatie who manages to defeat the raptors with the help of the allosaurus after Darius releases it. With the authorities arriving, the trainer retreats with her injured raptors, but the Broker's men escape with some of the eggs and dinosaurs aboard a cargo ship. Leaving Mateo to fill in the authorities and rescue the dinosaurs, the Nublar Six board the ship to find and stop the Broker to get answers. Darius' old boss Ronnie sends the article about Cabrera's death to Brooklyn who is still alive, albeit missing her left hand, and has built an investigation board into the smuggling ring.

Production

Development

As Camp Cretaceous finished production, executives at DreamWorks Animation Television and Netflix were interested in developing a follow-up. While Camp Cretaceous showrunner Scott Kreamer initially turned down the offer, he decided to work on a second series after he and co-showrunner Aaron Hammersley were given "an early rundown" of the film Jurassic World Dominion (2022), which inspired him to create a direct sequel starring older versions of the Camp Cretaceous cast in the vein of the later Harry Potter films. After deciding to work on the series, they reunited with story editor Bethany Armstrong Johnson to conceive the story for the series.

In November 2023, at Netflix's Geeked Week virtual event, Jurassic World: Chaos Theory was announced with an expected premiere date in 2024.

Writing

The series is set shortly before the events of Jurassic World Dominion. Kreamer was intrigued by the world depicted in the film, in which dinosaurs have established themselves on the mainland, and wanted to explore "what does that look like for an everyday person?" The producers also wanted to emphasize the characters now being older and "at that uncertain age where one is trying to figure out who they are and where they fit in the world," while facing their trauma, the proliferation of dinosaurs on the mainland, and a recent loss. The writers also made the show a conspiracy thriller in contrast to the more adventurous tone of Camp Cretaceous.

The series starts with the assumed death of Brooklynn, which the showrunners wrote into the story in response to criticism that Camp Cretaceous didn't put its main characters in enough danger. The series introduces holographic immersion technology that serves as "a great way to expose people to their fears [of dinosaurs] without having to face them up close and personal". The main intention of including this aspect was to explore Yaz's post-traumatic stress disorder from her time on Isla Nublar and how she copes with it as dinosaurs enter the mainland. The showrunners also established Yaz as having studied psychology because they liked the idea of her using the immersion technology to "help herself and others".

Casting

In November 2023, alongside the announcement of the series, Paul-Mikél Williams was confirmed to reprise his role from Camp Cretaceous as Darius Bowman. In March 2024, it was announced that Sean Giambrone would reprise his role as Ben Pincus. In April, it was announced that Raini Rodriguez and Kausar Mohammed would be reprising their roles as Sammy Gutierrez and Yasmina "Yaz" Fadoula respectively, with Darren Barnet replacing Ryan Potter as Kenji Kon. The showrunners originally wanted Jenna Ortega to reprise her role as Brooklynn, but she was unable to commit due to scheduling issues.

Animation

Animation services were provided by CGCG in Taipei, Taiwan. Production on a single episode took place over 17 months, with 12 weeks of animation. Visual inspirations for the series include conspiracy thrillers such as The Parallax View and All the President's Men, seeking to "evoke a similar uneasy vibe, putting the main characters at a disadvantage as they try to figure out what's coming next before it's too late".

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 100% approval rating with an average rating of 7.9/10, based on 5 critic reviews.
