Object history
English: Coat of arms of the Danish town of Ærøskøbing on the island of Ærø based on a seal known since 1629. The design might be older though as the seal of the hundred of Ærø from 1442 shows two trees. The arms might be canting as "ær" is a Danish name for maple. In depictions of the seal and the arms the maple tree developed into a linden tree, an old symbol of justice.
Dansk: Ærøskøbings byvåben, baseret på segl kendt siden 1629. Motivet kan dog være ældre, da Ærø herreds segl fra 1442 viser to træer. Våbnet er måske talende, idet træet oprindeligt kunne have været et ahorntræ (ær), der så gennem årene udviklede sig til at blive afbildet som et lindetræ, som er et gammelt symbol på retfærdighed.
