A WikiPuma is an editor who likes to expand articles which have little content like stubs or start-class articles.

Etymology[edit]

The term "wiki" comes from the English, meaning "a website that allows anyone to add, delete, or revise content by using a web browser".[1] The origin is Hawaiian for "to hurry, quick, fast".

"Puma" comes from the Quechua language.

Behavior[edit]

A WikiPuma, making ready to fix punctuation, typos and other weak areas on a start-class article

A WikiPuma is a creature who frequently prowls around Wikipedia, hunting for a stub or start-class article. When it has finally found this, it will pounce upon the article and begin its editing. These edits, like a WikiDragon's edits, are usually dramatic and bold. They are prone to at least doubling a page. Most information is gained through the intelligent WikiPuma's vast knowledge, but more often than not they will research and add sources to please other fellow WikiFauna. A WikiPuma has an excellent sense of vision and can spot a stub or start-class article from far away, but their deficient sense of smell stops them from finding WikiTrolls and other vandals. If they find them at a close range, however, the WikiTroll or vandal would do best to hide. A WikiPuma is much like a WikiDragon in that it makes bold edits, but if it comes across an article along the way that has spelling or grammar issues, the WikiPuma will usually put off their stub hunt to edit this article. A WikiPuma's hunger is rarely satiated, however, and will leave the new, bold page immediately after edits have been finished in search of a new article, but will put this newly created article on their watchlist.

WikiPumas are solitary creatures, preferring to do their massive edits alone in case of disagreements between editors. A WikiPuma, despite fixing spelling and grammar wherever they find it, will often believe their work perfect the first time, so other editors will often have to clean it up for them. Most of the time when a WikiPuma discovers their work has been edited, they will dash to the page and start looking for the edits. If they find that this work is satisfactory, they will often thank the editor who cleaned it up, but if they find that it has seemingly diminished the article in some way, a WikiPuma will either become defensive or completely shun the work, never looking at the article again.

A WikiPuma will often hold the want of becoming a catministrator or bureaucat, which will get them editing in the first place, but will often put aside these goals once they have fully adopted their lifestyle.

Ecology[edit]

Commensalism[edit]

When a WikiPuma happens to come across an article and helps it, the article instantly becomes a new home for different types of WikiFauna for as long as it takes until the article is freshly polished.

Mutualism[edit]

A WikiPuma and a WikiOtter work together, as a WikiPuma will provide fresh work for the WikiOtter and the WikiOtter will make a WikiPuma proud of the work that it has done. The bond between a WikiPuma and a WikiOtter is similar to that between a WikiDragon and a WikiOtter; however, a WikiPuma has a tendency to collect barnstars, attracted to their shininess. A WikiPuma, when it finds a barnstar, will hoard it in a cave or bury it in a place where it can find it later. When a WikiOtter does a particularly fine job, the WikiPuma will give away one of its barnstars as a gesture of gratitude.

Predation and predators[edit]

A WikiPuma is a natural predator and will feed on WikiMinnows and WikiTrouts for a living, holding a high respect for many of the other WikiFauna, especially their fellow bold editors the WikiDragons. A WikiPuma is normally held with the same high respect, but may fall prey to a WikiTroll or WikiBarbarian (assuming the WikiBarbarian is armed with flame) who vandalizes their work. A rampaging WikiOgre might pose a problem for a careful WikiPuma, for despite their common goals, the smaller and quieter WikiPuma can often get swallowed up by the edits made by a WikiOgre.

Aggression and defense[edit]

Two WikiPumas meeting at a common article

WikiPumas have two enemies: WikiTrolls and each other. WikiTrolls they find easy to deal with despite the predation, but other pumas could prove fatal because they have the same strength and power that the other one holds, but they share different ideas that the other is refusing to accept.

WikiPumas are not prone to flame wars as they are more or less afraid of fire. Normally upon meeting one who does not respect their work, the WikiPuma will completely shun that user, holding a grudge for a long time but not acting. When provoked repeatedly a WikiPuma might attack, and their sharp teeth and claws make them a powerful enemy. When a WikiPuma attacks, however, it is usually on impulse, a flash of rage caused by high WikiStress. When they are warned, they may become frightened and retreat into their cave, or they may still hold a high level of WikiStress and refuse to back down. If this is the case, one would be wise to alert a WikiPuma of a WikiStress meter so they could put it on their user page and we would all know if they were close to attacking.

WikiTrolls[edit]

The WikiTroll is the archnemesis of the WikiPuma. Most of these disagreements are because of territory issues. The WikiPuma wants to expand their territory, whereas the WikiTroll wants to destroy it. A stronger WikiPuma can usually fend off a troll, but if the troll keeps coming back, the WikiPuma will use their vocalization skill to call on WikiKnights or WikiGryphons to help them. If a WikiTroll comes back with fire, then the WikiPuma will temporarily retreat to call on a greater force to help them deal with the flame-brandishing troll. When a WikiPuma calls on a WikiKnight, the WikiKnight will fend off the troll but will keep a close eye on the puma while doing so, making sure that the somewhat friendlier WikiPuma is not really a WikiDragon in disguise.

Origin theories[edit]

In the beginning, WikiPumas were bountiful in the WikiWoods, but at this time no humans really knew about them. That is because, at this time, the WikiPuma would be able to put on a human coat and edit as if they were not a WikiPuma. They did not know how their kind would be accepted. However, their common edits made them soon begin to forget that they were WikiPumas at all, and peoples' knowledge of the species died out. When WikiFauna became accepted, WikiPumas believed that they were WikiDragons until one user found that she was not, in fact, a dragon, but rather a puma.

Evolution[edit]

Some WikiScientists believe that the WikiPuma evolved from the results of genetic splicing between the WikiDragon and the WikiCat. Therefore, the WikiPuma developed the grandiose edits and large size of the WikiDragon, as well as the agility and original want to become an administrator and bureaucrat of a WikiCat. They say that original efforts of this splicing created a large, winged, fire-breathing cat. It is believed that the wings later fell off but left the WikiPuma with an incredible jumping ability, and the fire breath, left unused, eventually wore away. The russet color of the large WikiCat stayed, and created the WikiPuma known today.

Others say that the WikiPuma is directly evolved from the now-extinct WikiAmericancheetah, which died out in the Late Nupedian temporal range.

Metamorphosis[edit]

Instead of an attempt of genetic splicing, there are those who say that the WikiPuma is instead a metamorphosis of either a WikiDragon who wants to become a WikiCat or a WikiCat that wants to become a WikiDragon. In the WikiVerse, the WikiScientists say, a desperate want can create a creature that is somewhat half-and-half.

Creationism[edit]

It is believed by some that when Jacob called his sons and compared them to various fauna and flora, some were referred to as WikiFauna. Judah is compared to a "lion", and some say that this is saying that he is a mountain lion, while others claim that he was referring to a now-extinct species known as the WikiLion. Like the WikiPuma was, explorers have gone in search of the WikiLion.

Mythology[edit]

It is believed that the WikiPuma was revered in the lands it originated from, and hated in the lands where it migrated. This led to a spotted range from the Nupedians. Some designed cities in the shape of the WikiPuma or considered it sacred for its abilities, while others believe that it came from the underworld and should be exterminated.

IUCN Red List Status[edit]

Conservation Status[edit]

In 2011, IUCN labeled WikiPumas a Critically Endangered Species under Section D., "Population size estimated to number fewer than 50 individuals". At the time of announcement, only one WikiPuma was identified. However, since then, more WikiPumas have been found, tranquilized, and tagged. Their number is now estimated at eight. If the WikiPumas can get their numbers above 50 and stay that way for five years, they can move up from being critically endangered to Endangered Species.

Contributing factors to status[edit]

It seems that the WikiPuma had been long forgotten as a WikiFauna species, leading many WikiPumas to misidentify themselves as WikiDragons. However, when one user discovered that she was not, in fact, a WikiDragon, others began to realize that their editing habits were much closer to the WikiPuma's. Therefore, population growth has expanded and is projected to continue to expand as more become aware of the WikiPuma's existence.

Conservation efforts[edit]

The best effort of conservation has been to suggest kindly to a misidentified WikiPuma that they are not, in fact, WikiDragons. Though the WikiKnights will sometimes mistake them for WikiDragons, no other helpful species of WikiFauna dislikes the WikiPuma. Therefore, by keeping destructive species like WikiTrolls away from the puma, their numbers will be able to grow.

Attributes, values, and advantages[edit]

WikiPumas can be identified by some characteristics, some positive and some negative. They include, but are not limited to, the following:

Attributes[edit]

  • Cleanliness – WikiPumas are one of the neatest WikiFauna, stopping frequently to "wash" a page by adding subheadings or fixing things in general so it looks clean.
  • Humor – When a WikiPuma is getting tired, they may spend a great deal of time adding to a humor article, more often than not WP:1000THINGS.
  • Knowledge – WikiPumas hold much knowledge on a usually wide variety of subjects, but are exceptionally keen on two or three subjects in particular and join WikiProjects devoted to them.
  • Random acts of kindness – Barnstars, cookies, and other ways of showing WikiLove are more often than not given to those who fix their work for the better.
  • Swiftness – Not including the WikiCheetah, the WikiPuma is one of the swiftest WikiFauna in the Wikiverse, turning a stub into a full article in as little time as fifteen minutes.

Values[edit]

  • Forgiveness – A WikiPuma will forgive those who they have done wrong against, or forgive those newcomers who have yet to learn about Wikipedia and have attacked or vandalized the site without meaning.
  • Honesty – WikiPumas are more honest when it comes to things. They will admit they are wrong either by outwardly saying that they are wrong or by not blaming anybody else when it comes to the matter and not objecting when blamed.
  • Justice – Justice is the epitome of what WikiPumas stand for. When chastisements are in order, a WikiPuma is very decisive about what the user should be slapped with, and the harshness of warnings or punishment. They are outraged when they see wrong judgment.
  • Neutrality – WikiPumas are not types who will ignore the "neutral point of view" pillar, never taking one side or the other publicly in a Wikipedian article, and only taking sides when it is something encyclopedic.
  • Prudence – WikiPumas have a great deal of common sense and expect the same from you.

Advantages[edit]

Unlike the WikiDragon, the WikiPuma holds no magical powers, although they do have several advantages.

  • Adaptability – A WikiPuma can easily step out of their area of expertise when it comes to editing and quickly adapt to fix the article.
  • Agility – With their agility and swiftness, a WikiPuma can get to a new stub article with ease.
  • Bite – WikiPumas have sharp teeth that they can use to attack any time.
  • Retractable claws – WikiPumas have claws that they can use for attacks, but the claws can also retract for kinder gestures.
  • Sight – WikiPumas have great vision and can see a stub from far away, then proceeding to use their agility and speed to get to it.
  • Vocalization – In an argument over how to make an article better, WikiPumas frequently voice their opinion.

Juveniles[edit]

A Juvenile WikiPuma quickly picking up traits

Juvenile WikiPumas hold some difference from their mature counterparts. Like a mature WikiPuma, juveniles will make extensive edits. Unlike a mature WikiPuma, these edits will almost always be in their area of expertise, as they have not yet gained the advantage of adaptability. They also do not have the mind to cite their sources, using only material from what they already knew, which in some cases can be wrong. Juveniles also do not know what a barnstar is and therefore do not collect them to give to those who help with articles, preferring a nice thank you and maybe, if they have searched more, a smile or a cookie to show some WikiLove. A young WikiPuma will also ignore their agility and sight, wandering through what they know looking for something that they can add to. Their sight, not fully developed, stops them from making minor edits along the way such as spelling and grammar, but when they happen to read an article and it has these errors, they will not hesitate to make the adjustments needed to. Juveniles are also more proud of their work and more likely to attack those who think otherwise.

Mature WikiPumas often do not tell juveniles anything, leaving the juvenile to learn for themselves random acts of kindness and no personal attacks. While a juvenile will often be angered that fellow WikiPumas do not help them, they will come to realize later in life that learning from your mistakes is the only way to avoid them, and will not help the new juveniles.

Overworking[edit]

An overworked WikiPuma enjoying rest

WikiPumas, because of their frequent and bold edits, can occasionally become severely overworked, gaining higher levels of WikiStress until they are at the point where it's close to the nuclear explosion. When this happens, you should avoid outwardly telling them to take a break from Wikipedia at the risk of their Wikistress meter going over the limit, which would prove perilous, but if you do not tell them to take their break at all, the meter would either erupt, which could possibly lead to attacks and vandalization, or it will crack and the WikiPuma will become insane for a while, which provides some of the same results as if the meter erupts.

One way to avoid a WikiPuma's meter overflowing is editing their userpage, sending some WikiLove to other users, or editing fun pages, during which their Wikistress meter will slowly go down. The one thing that you must guarantee to make sure that Wikipedia is safe from an overworked WikiPuma is that the WikiPuma will add to the page for a very long time, as you must wait twenty-four hours to guarantee that once they start editing again the Wikistress meter will not go over the limit again. Overworking is, fortunately, not something that leads to a WikiPuma becoming one of the WikiFallen, as the condition is common with the WikiPumas, which are otherwise pleasant and kind creatures always willing to edit more, and becoming a member of the WikiFallen would prove to be a very sad day for Wikipedia if it happened to a WikiPuma.

WikiPumas that are in need of a WikiBreak and must take a catnap may place {{Wikipedia:WikiPuma/Catnap}} on their user page or talk page to warn you that they are not ready to come back to Wikipedia just yet.

Praise[edit]

Another way to save the WikiPuma from overworking is through WikiLove. A WikiPuma will be happy with any barnstar given to them, but they wouldn't mind getting chicken, turkey, milk, a kitten to take care of, a hug, or even just a smile once in a while.

Persecution[edit]

A sign warning of WikiPumas

WikiPumas are generally regarded to be worse-tempered than they actually are because of their occasional attacks. Because of this, they have gained a bad reputation with other WikiFauna who do not understand that a WikiPuma is easily subject to Wikistress, which can make them prone to lashing out. Since they are persecuted, many WikiPumas have gone into hiding, although their hunting nature means that no matter how hard they try to stop, they must continue editing. Some skilled Wikipedians can easily differentiate a WikiPuma from any other type of WikiFauna no matter how hard they try to hide, whereas others may think that a WikiPuma is in reality a WikiDragon if the WikiPuma only makes their massive edits to try to satiate their hunger. In this case the WikiPuma may be persecuted not only by WikiTrolls but also by WikiKnights trying to slay what they believe is a WikiDragon. Upon finding that it is instead a WikiPuma, the WikiKnight in question may either apologize for the misunderstanding or instead believe that the WikiPuma is a WikiDragon in disguise and attempt to slay the WikiPuma. When this happens, WikiPumas retreat from Wikipedia, busying themself with real-world work for a time until Wikipedians forget about them, and then come back from their break to resume their general hunting and stalking for more sub-class articles. Unfortunately, WikiPumas can lose all track of time this way and come back to find that Wikipedia has changed since they have been gone, and they become outraged at the changes, but try to cope.

Locating WikiPumas[edit]

WikiPumas are almost impossible to locate because of their persecution. They are also easily confused with WikiDragons, WikiCats, or WikiCyclops. Because of this, the WikiPuma might believe that they are one of those instead and identify themselves with the wrong WikiFauna. For those who are sure of their WikiFauna identity as a WikiPuma, they may add {{User:Σ/UBX/WikiPuma}} or {{User:Silence of Järvenpää/Userboxes/WikiPuma}} to their user page. However, a WikiPuma is known for its creativity and grandiosity, so some have identified themselves in other ways, such as a picture and caption.

If you are one of a minor group of WikiPumas who does not want to be identified easily because of the current endangeredness of the species, they may wish to add a topicon by adding {{WikiPuma topicon}} to their page.

WikiPumas that are in need of a WikiBreak and must take a catnap may place {{Wikipedia:WikiPuma/Catnap}} on their user page or talk page to warn you that they are not ready to come back to Wikipedia just yet.

WikiBlack Panthers are the WikiFallen version of WikiPumas. They are very dangerous because they have all the strengths and abilities of WikiPumas, but use them for evil.
