Plot[edit]

Although Ram Narain (Brahm Bhardwaj) is married to Achala (Sulochana Chatterjee) he remains a womanizer and an alcoholic and owes money to his family for his behavior. One night in a nearly unconscious drunken state, he falls down the stairs and dies, leaving Achala and his son, Shyam (Manoj Kumar) to face life alone. Noor Mohammed (Shivraj) takes on responsibility for Achala and Shyam and takes them to his house where he has a daughter, Salma (Shammi). Time passes and both Salma and Shyam grow up. Shyam becomes a brilliant college student and earns scholarships. Shyam is greatly respected by the other students including Rekha Rai (Shakila), who is the daughter of wealthy parents. While returning from college Shyham finds old Noor Mohammed working hard as a labourer to earn money to support his family. By this time Shyam and Rekha have become involved in an affair. Shyam leaves college and shoulders responsibility for his family while Rekha's father selects Deepak (Kamal Kapoor) as a husband for Rekha. The troubled and frustrated Shyam starts drinking in the same way his father did without realizing that it is a path that will lead to major disaster.
