alternate names[edit]

For alternate names, should Johnny be included? Johnny in that spelling is the familial formation of John

Alphabetization[edit]

Split[edit]

I'm not sure which came first, but this page needs to be split into at least two. The biblical figure deserves his own article on Wikipedia free of any material on the name itself, except a link to the name article. Likewise, the name deserves its own article, especially since there is confusion over the relationship between Jonathan and John. I would prefer Jonathan (Biblical figure) and Jonathan as the article titles. -Acjelen 16:30, 25 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of people with first name Jonathan[edit]

I've removed this list again. It is and will always be woefully incomplete and will never be anything than an indiscriminate list clogging the page. While there has been discussion about the format for dab pages about surnames, the given name pages only very rarely list these and the recent discussion on Julie has confirmed that the link to special:allpages is preferable. Meaning of Name[edit]

"Whom Jehovah gave", "God's gift", "Gift of god" I added the last two since the first is not the only one. It would be biased to leave other common meanings out, as they are distinct and come from different histories. You can't get "Gift of god" or "God's gift" out of "Jonathan"; any more than you can get "My Judge is somebody" out of "Daniel". I really don't think "Gift of God" is even possible here: maybe in the name "Nathan" which has no title/name based affix (but I'm no Hebrew scholar). Nathan[edit]

"Nate" is a modern, short form. "Nathan" means "gift from", so its not necessarily that one name is based off another: they're just names using a common Hebrew word. Nathaniel means "Gift of God", whereas "Elnathan" would mean "God has given/God's Gift". --IronMaidenRocks (talk) 06:17, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
