LocationSparta Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, U.S.
Outcome1 death

On February 26, 2024, Rebekah A. Byler, a 23-year-old Amish woman, was found dead in her home outside of Spartansburg, Pennsylvania.[1][2][3]

Event[edit]

Byler's husband, Andy Byler, left the house in the morning with a neighbor, leaving Rebekah Byler, who was six months pregnant, with her two young children.[3][4][5]

Upon Andy Byler's return home, he and a family friend found Rebekah unresponsive in the living room. Police who arrived on the scene after the family friend called 911 noted Rebekah Byler had lacerations on her neck and head.[4][6] Byler's son and daughter, aged two and three, were unharmed.[6][7]

Investigation[edit]

Police initially had no suspects in the killing and asked the public for leads.[1]

On the evening of March 1, police arrested a suspect and launched a search of his home in Corry, Pennsylvania, about eight miles away from the Byler home, which continued into the morning of March 2.[3][4] The homeowner was arrested and charged with two counts of homicide, for the deaths of Rebekah and her fetus, as well as counts for burglary and trespassing.[8]

A preliminary hearing was held on March 15.[8][9]

Reactions[edit]

Community members set up a GoFundMe to raise money for Rebekah Byler's funeral and a new home for her husband and children.[7]
