This list of towns and cities in England ordered by population, as defined and compiled by the Office for National Statistics after the 2021 UK Census. London is the largest city in England by both area and population, whilst the second largest city is Birmingham. In total, England consists of 55 cities. Multiple larger towns, the largest town being Northampton, are larger than the majority of England's cities.

Norwich

All have city status (except Luton, Northampton and Reading) while London has London and Westminster with city status. The West Midlands county has three cities over 200,000; Birmingham, Coventry and Wolverhampton.

  1. ^ A figure of 197,340 is sometimes quoted. This is the population of a statistical subdivision that the ONS calls "Milton Keynes", despite the fact that it excludes Bletchley, which has been a constituent of the city since its foundation in 1967
