This list of towns and cities in England ordered by population, as defined and compiled by the Office for National Statistics after the 2021 UK Census . London is the largest city in England by both area and population, whilst the second largest city is Birmingham . In total, England consists of 55 cities. Multiple larger towns, the largest town being Northampton , are larger than the majority of England's cities.

All have city status (except Luton , Northampton and Reading ) while London has London and Westminster with city status. The West Midlands county has three cities over 200,000; Birmingham , Coventry and Wolverhampton .
