Rationale for Changing "1899" to "1900," and "PD-US-1923-abroad" Tag to "PD-US"[edit]

The source of this image (which was uploaded in 2011) is not given. It is most likely the one from the top of the Washington University in St. Louis page "Library unveils Little Black Sambo collection | October 24, 2007 | By Jessica Daues", specifically a 200x320 pixel JPG file. This "Story of Little Black Sambo.jpg" file and the WUSTL JPG file are identical pixel-for-pixel in Photoshop.

Unfortunately, the WUSTL page does not specify the place and year of publication. The image is most likely from the cover of a Stokes (U.S.) edition of 1900, not the Grant Richards (British) editions of 1899, based on the following:

  • The covers of the British editions of 1899 had "pale green (shining surface) cloth, printed in dark green inks, with ruled borders and vertical stripes." (See: Schiller, Justin G (Autumn 1974). "The Story of Little Black Sambo". The Book Collector. 23 (3). The Collector Ltd: 381–386.)
  • The image is similar to the "Image of Cover Art" on a page "Helen Bannerman's Little Black Sambo: Bibliographic Description of the First U.S. Edition" (that is, Stokes 1900). The page states in part "the yellow ink was too heavy during the first press run, making the green umbrella actually yellow."
    • For photos of the 1900 cover, see Ruby Lane, eBay ("According to Barton, The Pictus Orbis Sambo, pages 116-118, the first U.S. edition had the title and author lettering on the covers in pale blue, matching the color of Sambo's pants in the illustrations on the two boards"), Bauman Rare Books, etc.
