That loqwest ship present in the image was indeed the ESSEX (CVS-9), "The Oldest and Boldest."

Across the carrier pier was the decommissioned ANTIETAM (CVS-36), shown with her prototype angled flight deck - the first US evaluation of the concept. The flight deck level twin 5"-38 gun mounts forward and mounts aft of the island are shown, as well as the original open bow.

Before LAKE CHAMPAIN (CVS-39) ("CHAMP") was moved to the SEABEE piers in Davisville, RI, she was berthed where ANTIETAM is currently shown. CHAMP had an enclosed hurrican bow, but "The Straightest and the Greatest" kept her original flight deck design to the end.

Following the decommissioning of ESSEX in 11969, WASP (CVS-18) was brought down from the Naval Shipyard Boston to be homeported at Quonset until her decommissioning in 1972.
