Ideate e costruite all'inizio degli anni '90 per sostituire le V. 4000 "Drago" nel contrasto ai nuovi mezzi veloci utilizzati dai contrabbandieri, sono vedette veloci in grado di superare i 50 nodi, disponendo di una notevole autonomia e ottime caratteristiche tecnico - nautiche.

Le prime due unità prototipo (V.5000 e V.5100 ) sono entrate in servizio nel 1992, mentre nel corso degli anni 1994/2001 sono entrate in linea le restanti n.20 unità.
