Summary

This is a ruptured shipping container that contained uranium hexafluoride. The accident happened in 1986 at the en:Sequoyah Fuels Corporation facility near Grove, Oklahoma (then owned by en:Kerr-McGee Corporation). It happened when a tank was overfilled and they tried to heat it up to remove some material. One man's life was lost, and dozens of people made visits to area hospitals. Many tons of material went into the atmosphere and surrounding environment. There are many media and government reports about the incident. This photo was taken from a 1986 report published by the en:Nuclear Regulatory Commission, part of the US federal government.
