Description

Two Hopi Indian kachina dolls (male & female), ca.1900
Photograph of 2 Hopi Indian kachina dolls (male & female) on display, ca.1906. Labels below the dolls identify them as: "Palhikmana Katchina Tihu" and "Shaalako Katchina Mana Tihu".; "Palhikmana Katchina Tihu. -- The Palhikmana is really not a Katchina. In Mi[...] and Walpi the women and the girls of the Marau[?] order perform a dance with the head dress but without masks, and are then called Palhikmanas. The Oraibis [...] imitate this personage, but as Katchinas, i.e., masked. This is interesting as showing how Katchinas originate. The original Palhikmana has no chin decoration such as is generally seen in the Palhik katchinas. -- Oraibi, Arizona. No. [...]. Presented by Mr. Stanley McCormick, Rev. H.A. Voth, collector."; "Shaalako Katchina Mana Tihu. -- [...]. -- Oraibi, Arizona. No.[...] Presented by Mr. Stanley McCormick, Rev. H.A. Voth, collector."
