| Description |
English: The battle of Temesvár (9 August 1849). The situation between 5-7 p.m. The battle starts well for the Hungarians, but suddenly Bem learns that his artillery run out of ammunition, because the former commander, Dembinski, sent the Hungarian ammunition away from Temesvár, towards Lugos. To make the situation worse, Bem falls down from his horse, injuring himself, and many think that he died, starting a panic among his troops. The Austrian artillery crushes the Hungarian troops, which start to rout. The Hussars of Dessewffy on the right flank and the Kmety division on the left flank heroically slow the Austrian advance down, in order to help the other troops, among which are many rookies and even newly recruited militias without weapons, to retreat. Nevertheless the troops retreat in disorder. The V. corps led by Károly Vécsey, which was besieging the fortress of Temesvár, retreats with Bem's troops, aprotecting their back. |
