PART VI. STATE INSTITUTIONS. STATE INSTITUTIONS. Wisconsin, though one of the younger states, already ranks among the foremost in itspublic institutions. Both in its educational advantages and in its reformatory and char-itable institutions it is surpassed by few of the states of the Union. For its educational advantages it is largely indebted to the munificence of Congress indonating lands for the support of public schools, a state university, normal schools and anagricultural college. There are now in successful operation in this State, a University,comprising several colleges, and five normal schools. The general government, when theState was first organized, bestowed, and has since added, large tracts of land to it for edu-cational purposes. This liberality has enabled Wisconsin to adopt a system of district,graded and high schools, normal schools and university which has placed the state in thefront rank in the matter of education.
