Coast Guard, a British force formerlyunder the customs department, and intendedonly to prevent smuggling, but now organizedalso for purposes of defense and governed bythe admiralty. The men, who are generally oldmen-of-wars men of good character, have highpay and are furnished with free cottages. Theforce numbers, with officers and men, about4,000. Coast Pilots are compiled to assist mari-ners in the navigation of their vessels, and, whenfrom any cause they are without charts, to enablethem to safely carry their vessels from port toport along the coast.
