Summary

Author
Willem Van de Velde, the Younger
Description
English: The 'Guernsey' before a light breeze

A starboard broadside view of the ‘Guernsey’ before a light breeze under fore course and fore and main topsails. Another ship is close-hauled on the port tack in the right background.

This is an unsigned pen and brown ink drawing by the Younger. It is inscribed ‘gaerensae.’

The first ‘Guernsey’ was built in 1654, made a fireship in 1688, reconverted 1689 and condemned in 1693. The second ‘Guernsey’ was built in 1696 and rebuilt in 1717. The drawing could therefore be as late as 1700.
