| Description |
English: Stump Cross, Long Causeway The Long Causeway is part of an ancient road or packhorse track from Lancaster, Ribchester and Whalley, through Burnley to Heptonstall. It is marked on the map extending from south east of Burnley for about four miles towards Yorkshire. An article written in 1900 records the remains or sites of five ancient crosses along the causeway. In that article it was recorded that only a portion of the shaft of this one, Stump Cross, remained and it still appears to be in the same condition. It is on the roadside, on the left going towards Yorkshire on a high point adjacent to Mosley Height. The words STUMP CROSS are carved low down on one side with a small cross carved near the top, and on the other side is carved an Ordnance Survey broad arrow. |
