Summary

Description Heraldic escutcheon on monument in Tawstock Church, Devon, to William Bourchier, 3rd Earl of Bath (d.1623) of Tawstock Court, and his wife Frances Russell, a daughter of Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford, Lord Lieutenant of Devon, showing the arms of Russell (Argent, a lion rampant gules on a chief sable three escallops of the first) impaling Sapcote (Sable, three dovecotes argent). This represents the marriage of John Russell, 1st Earl of Bedford (d.1555), to Anne Sapcote (d.1559), a daughter of Sir Guy Sapcote of Elton, Huntingdonshire (parents of Francis Russell, 2nd Earl of Bedford).
