Summary

Description
English: Rotary Welcome Arch, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

ESSAR STEEL

ALGOMA FACILITY

Historically, the Rotary Welcome Cairns and Arch marked the only entrance into Sault Ste. Marie: the international ferry from Michigan. The Arch welcomed travelers disembarking from the ferry onto Ferry Street (previously known as Foster Drive, now Russ Ramsay Way). With the support of Algoma Steel, who designed and donated the arch, and other local businesses, the Rotary Welcome Arch was built with local materials and officially erected in 1937. The building of the International Bridge and the Trans-Canada Highway around Lake Superior removed the focus from Russ Ramsay Way and the Arch as the primary access point, and the Arch was taken down in 1962 leaving only the sandstone Cairns remaining. The Cairns were recognized for their historical value and became a heritage site. The Cairns have stood on their own for 49 years. The Cairns were reconciled on July 16th, 2011 with the present Arch, dedicated back to the City of Sault Ste. Marie. They now welcome visitors to Sault Ste. Marie's beautiful historical waterfront, Civic Centre, Board Walk and Hub Trail. The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie celebrates this beautiful representation of the unique fellowship we share with our community.

Many thanks go to Essar Steel Algoma Inc. for their donation of the premium steel used to construct the Arch, and to their highly skilled team that looked after fabrication and installation; The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie for management of the project as well as its financial support; M.R. Wright and Associates Co. LTD and MGP Architects - Engineers Inc. for their design and engineering of the Arch; Top Line Electric Ltd. for installation of the lighting and electrical work; and to the City of Sault Ste. Marie for their overwhelming support and encouragement with the Arch Project. The Rotary Club of Sault Ste. Marie would like to recognize Rotarians, Mr. Paul Dalseg and Dr. Alex Sinclair, for their special interest and support of the Rotary Welcome Arch and Cairns.
