Title
Romano-British copper alloy Dragonesque brooch
Description
English: An enamelled copper alloy Dragonesque brooch dating to the early Roman period. The brooch is 'S' shaped in plan, with one terminal facing right, and the other twisted at a right angle so that the head forms a flat 'foot'.

Both heads are decorated in the same manner. The snout is upturned and decorated with a small circular cell filled with orange enamel. The eye is circular and formed by a small circular cell filled with green enamel, with a band of orange enamel surrounding it.

The body flares into a wide pointed oval shape and is decorated with further enamelled cells. In the centre is a large circle with perhaps a cell in the centre, but certainly an enamelled band around it. The band appears to alternate with one ghalf in orange enamel and the other in green. This area is worn. The body is decorated with four sub-triangular cells, two of which are filled with orange enamel and two of green.

A twisted copper alloy pin is attached to the neck of the the angled head. The pin would have been secured by twisting it onto the opposite neck.

The brooch is in excellent condition.
