Summary

Description
English: The stones in the foreground are the foundation of the Roman bridge that crossed this river just outside the West gate of ancient Philippi. The surviving paving stones (at right) are part of the via Egnatia, the Roman highway that facilitated travel through Macedon. It was likely near here that the small Jewish community of Philippi met each Sabbath to pray in the early 50s of the first century AD.
