Description
English: Sketched portrait of the Irish soldier Robert Martin O'Connor (1880-1917) around 1914,
Sergeant with the "A" Company of the 2nd Battalion of the Leinster Regiment (Service No. 9337) during World War I.
He met his death on 31st July 1917 during the Third Battle of Passchendaele when the 2nd Leinsters were in the sector
just north of Mount Sorrel (south of Sanctuary Wood museum) near Ypres Belgium,
He has no known grave, but is commemorated on panel 44 of the Menin Gate Wall in Ypres, Belgium .

He was a brother-in-law of Capt. D. D. Sheehan MP of the Royal Munster Fusiliers.

Robert O’Connor was born on 16 April 1880 in Tralee County Kerry, Ireland,
as sixteenth of seventeen children of Martin and Catherine (née Counihan) O’Connor of 46/47 Bridge Street, Tralee, Ireland.
He joined the United Kingdom Army at an early age where he served in the South African Campaign.
After service with the Seaforth Highlanders (Service No. 6560) he transferred to the Leinster Regiment.

In April 1916 he married Mary Hennessy of Midleton, their address 1 Lower Browne St. Youghal, Co. Cork.
His only son Robert (Bob) Martin was born on 19 August 1917 (just after he was killed), later becoming Sergeant in the Irish Army at the Collins Military Barracks, Cork and father of three daughters, Eleanor, Mary and Noreen.
