Description
English: This is a portrait after a work by François Riss, depicting The Duchesse de Berry imprisoned following her unsuccessful rebellion in the Vendée in 1832. The work is a symbol of Legitimist ideology: aged by her treatment yet defiant, the Duchesse holds a miniature of her son the Duc de Bordeaux, the Legitimist heir to the throne of France. The original work was also circulated in a print by Gaulon with the composition reversed; an example is held in the Jeanvrot collection at the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Bordeaux.
