Summary

Description This is the old Rhinehart house, located on the former site of the old Jackson County Courthouse in Webster, North Carolina. The humble Craftsman-Style bungalow was constructed in 1935 by the Rhinehart Family on the site of the old Jackson County Courthouse, which had stood at the location since 1888. Utilizing materials from the old structure, the small house sits at the corner of North Carolina Highway 116 (Webster Road) and Buchanan Loop, and was, for many years, home to the Rhinehart family. The old courthouse it replaced was the second in the county, built of clay excavated from a nearby clay pit mine in 1888, replacing an earlier wooden courthouse from 1852 that had burned. The impressive structure was the nucleus of the town of Webster until 1914, when the county seat designation was moved to the thriving railroad town of Sylva, where a new courthouse was constructed. The old courthouse languished and declined, much like the surrounding town, and was finally pulled down in 1935 to make way for the house. The loss of the courthouse dealt a severe blow to the town, which saw its town government and local business community largely dissolve overnight, as the town’s reason to be was removed. It was not until 1953-54, long after the local business community and many local residents had departed for Sylva, that the town government was re-established, and continues to function to this day. Today, Webster is a quiet small town that has many charming old houses, two lovely Victorian-era churches, and an old rock school, sitting along the banks of the Tuckaseigee River in the heart of Jackson County, on the ancient site of the Cherokee “Middle Town” of Unadanti'yi.
