This specimen growing in the area at Logan dedicated to Chilean plants. In a different area at Logan is to be found the Champion Tree (largest specimen currently growing in the U.K.) of this somewhat frost-tender shrub. The fruits of R. spinosus are used by the Machi (shamanesses / shamans) of the Huilliche people of the Los Lagos Region of southern Chile as an antidote to their highly toxic hallucinogen Latua pubiflora (Griseb.)Baillon (Solanaceae).
