Description
Svenska: Carl, 1861-1951, Svensk prins, hertig av Västergötland, tredje son till Oscar II. Efter universitetsstudier i Uppsala ägnade han sig främst åt kavalleriet. Han blev generalmajor 1897, general 1908 och var 1898-1912 inspektör för kavalleriet. C. kallades under denna tid populärt "Blå prinsen". Sin mest betydande insats gjorde C. som ordförande i det svenska Röda korsets överstyrelse 1906-45. Han ledde då en rad humanitära internationella insatser, bl.a. hjälp åt f.d. krigsfångar och åt krigsbarn. Vid C:s avgång instiftade Gustaf V Prins Carl-medaljen. C. förmäldes 1897 med prinsessan Ingeborg av Danmark. Paret hade döttrarna Margaretha, dansk prinsessa, Märtha, kronprinsessa av Norge, och Astrid, drottning av Belgien, samt sonen Carl Bernadotte (f. 1911). Västergötlands museum, 1M16-B145046:1564.
