Photograph of the Tombs at Lucknow taken by Major Robert Christopher Tytler and his wife, Harriet, in the aftermath of the Uprising of 1857. The tomb of General Neill and others are seen at the left, Sir Henry Lawrence's tomb is at the right. During Uprising of 1857, Lucknow was the scene of bitter conflict, it was sieged twice then recaptured in March 1858 by British forces under Sir Colin Campbell. The Residency Complex of Lucknow was occupied by Sir Henry Lawrence (1806-1857), Chief Commissioner of Awadh at the outbreak of the Uprising and he died during the siege in July. James George Smith Neill (1810-1857) was killed during the British attempt of relief of Lucknow in September 1857.
