Purpose of use

The outdoor public sculpture image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a major later body of work by Neil Goodman, dating from 2000 onward: his commissioned, monumental public sculpture in bronze. These site-specific works include indoor wall works and, as in this case, outdoor works that emphasize multiple vantage points, encouraging viewers to move around and look at and through sculptures to notice shifting forms, voids and relationships to architecture, space, and landscape. The outdoor work includes the earlier, more linear "Shadows and Echoes" works and this later, horizontal series, which employs shard-like, trapezoidal forms of greater mass with rectangular "windows" or openings that maximize the synergy of positive and negative spaces and offer shifting perspectives on their surroundings, in this case, the Valparaiso University campus. Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this key body of monumental, outdoor sculpture work and its reception and impact, which included major museum, municipal and institutional commissions. Goodman's work of this type and this work in particular is discussed in the article and by prominent critics cited in the article.

Replaceable?

There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Neil Goodman, and the installation no longer exists in this form, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image.

Other information

The image will not affect the value of the original work or limit the copyright holder's rights or ability to distribute the original due to its low resolution and the general workings of the art market, which values the actual work of art. Because of the low resolution, illegal copies could not be made.
