| Description |
English: Mining Subsidence, Roseberry Mine The scar in the field nearest was caused by subsidence of the workings of the nearby Roseberry Ironstone Mine which operated from 1871 to 1926. The ironstone seam is very close to the surface at this point and was the mine's southern limit. The edge of the seam can be established out by the sudden change of slope a little way beyond the broken ground (where the planting lanes curve). Mining was supposed to have been the cause of a landslip on Roseberry in 1873 and again in 1912. It was from this latter slip that the distinctive face of Roseberry we see today resulted.
The farm in the distance is Aireyholme Farm where Capt. Cooks lived as a boy. |
